3 Part time position needed Research Assistant, Akha and Red Lahu Translators

A research team from the Mahidol Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit is conducting a qualitative study looking to explore the vulnerabilities and abilities of research participants and the ethical challenges that researchers face when working with vulnerable populations. To do this we are carrying out interviews with research participants, researchers and healthcare workers in Chiang Rai. 

We are looking for 3 part time positions

1.An enthusiastic Research Assistant to help translate interview transcriptions from Thai to English with support from the research team. The position is available for roughly one day a week until the 31^st of December 2018.

2.An enthusiastic Akha translator to help translate interviews from English or Thai to Akha and to help translate interview transcriptions into English or Thai with support from the research team.  We need help with 1 interview initially between July and September 2018.

3.An enthusiastic Red Lahu translator to help translate interviews from English or Thai to Red Lahu and to help translate interview transcriptions into English or Thai with support from the research team. We need help with 1-3 interviews initially between July and September 2018.

Responsibilities of the Research Assistant

·         Participate in a training session on interview transcription and translation

·         Translate and potentially transcribe the recorded interviews

·         Participate in feedback and discussion sessions throughout the interview period

Responsibilities of the Translators 1 position for Akha and 1 for Red Lahu

·         Participate in a training session on interview transcription and translation

·         Translate the interview from English or Thai to Akha/Red Lahu

·         Potentially transcribe and translate the recorded interviews

·         Participate in feedback and discussion sessions

Essential requirements

·         Undergraduate student

·         Excellent command of written and spoken Thai and English For translators; Akha/Red Lahu and English

·         High attention to detail

·         Good communication skills

·         Able to work independently

·         Good interpersonal skills

Preferred characteristics

·         Good written and spoken northern Thai

·         Experience in social science research

·         Local background from Chiang Rai

·         Pay will be dependent on experience Research assistant approximately 1000 THB per hour of interview roughly 8 hours work Translators approximately 500THB per interview half a day’s work and if able to transcribe and also translate each hour of interview roughly 16 hours work add more 2000 THB

·         Equipment and working space will be provided

·         Letter of recommendation from Oxford researchers if satisfactory performance
